Pool Automation vs Pool Timers: What's the Difference?

A simple timer vs a full app-controlled system — and when the upgrade is worth it.

A pool timer is a simple device that turns a single circuit — usually your pump — on and off at set times. Pool automation is a full system that connects multiple pieces of equipment to a central controller you can manage from an app, with schedules, scenes, and remote control.

Timers are cheap and reliable for one job, but they can't adjust for seasons, respond to weather, or tell you when something's wrong. Automation can ramp a variable-speed pump, fire up the spa on your drive home, dim the lights, and alert you to a leak — all from your phone.

If you only run a pump on a fixed schedule and nothing else, a timer may still be enough. But most South Florida pools have heaters, lights, and water features that benefit from coordinated control, which is where automation pays for itself in convenience and energy savings.
